<p>Multiple scientific studies have demonstrated that garlic can indeed be effective in preventing heart disease. It has been shown that in cultures where people eat large amounts of garlic, there is a lower incidence of heart attacks. Let&#8217;s examine the reasons why this might be so.</p>
<p>Garlic and Cholesterol Levels. Garlic is said to help with high<span id="more-33"></span> cholesterol levels by lowering the amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (so-called &#8220;bad&#8221; cholesterol) as well as increasing the amount of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (so-called &#8220;good&#8221; cholesterol).</p>
<p>These garlic health benefits are said to be a result of phytochemicals present in garlic that seem to work similar to cholesterol-lowering drugs. Garlic does not have any significant side effects, so using garlic for lowering cholesterol is certainly a safer method.</p>
<p>How Much Can Garlic Lower Your Cholesterol? If you want to use garlic to lower your cholesterol, how much of a reduction can you expect? Based on studies that have been done, about ten percent would be a reasonable estimate. Keep in mind, though, that the dosages in those studies were very high, as many as two dozen cloves of garlic a day!</p>
<p>Although there are probably easier ways to lower cholesterol numbers, I wouldn&#8217;t let that discourage you from eating garlic. Garlic has so many additional benefits, it barely matters if you don&#8217;t lower your cholesterol. The fact is, lowering your overall cholesterol numbers isn&#8217;t that significant to your risk of heart disease. A more important factor is the ratio of HDL to LDL cholesterol, something garlic also improves.</p>
<p>High Cholesterol Levels Are Not What Causes Heart Disease.<br />
Cardiovascular disease does not occur because you have too much cholesterol in your bloodstream. It actually begins when the walls of your arteries and the cholesterol in your blood are damaged by free radicals and oxidative stress. Excessive free radicals are a result of your exposure to environmental toxins, in addition to a poor dietary habits. Free-radical damaged cholesterol molecules stick to the walls of your arteries, and each other, eventually clogging the artery and causing a heart attack. Ultimately, it doesn&#8217;t matter how much, or how little, cholesterol there is i<br />

n your blood.</p>
<p>Garlic and Other Antioxidants Are the Key to Preventing Heart Disease.<br />
The real reason why garlic and other antioxidants prevent heart disease is that antioxidants stop the oxidation of cholesterol. As long as your arteries and cholesterol are healthy, atherosclerosis won&#8217;t develop. </p>
<p>Garlic Works Better than Aspirin as a Blood Thinner. Aspirin is widely recommended by doctors as a way to prevent a heart attack, due to its anti-clotting effect. Garlic is said to be just as effective as an anti-clotting substance, without the dangerous side effects.<br />
If you are taking aspirin as a preventive measure against heart disease, you might want to consider a natural alternative instead. You won&#8217;t just get the heart protection you&#8217;re looking for, but all of the other health benefits of garlic and ginkgo as well!</p>
<p>Aspirin Has Potentially Dangerous Side Effects. Using aspirin on a daily basis may cause stomach irritation that leads to bleeding, and possible kidney problems. Daily aspirin has also been connected to an increase in brain hemorrhages.</p>
<p>Other Antioxidants That Prevent Heart Disease. Garlic is just one of the natural substances that you can use to prevent heart disease. Numerous studies on the health benefits of garlic and antioxidants such as vitamin E and vitamin C, coenzyme Q-10 and ginkgo biloba, in addition to garlic, have all proven their ability to prevent heart disease.</p>
<p>Garlic and Cholesterol &#8212; Conclusions<br />
Is garlic able to lower cholesterol? It certainly seems so, although, as I explained above, lowering your numbers does not really have any significant benefit to your overall health or risk of heart disease. High cholesterol numbers may be an indication that there are problems somewhere else in your body, but high cholesterol is not inherently harmful. Eating garlic does seem to offer protection against heart disease, for whatever reason, and it also offers many other health benefits that make it a wise choice for anyone&#8217;s diet.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Maintaining the correct levels of cholesterol in the body is essential.  First of all there has to be a certain level of cholesterol in the body as it plays an vital role in the creation of tissue and cells.  However, too much cholesterol can increase the risk of a stroke and associated coronary diseases</p>
<p>In the quest to keep cholesterol levels under control and arteries clear, it is important to<span id="more-30"></span> maintain a healthy diet that is free from cholesterol and knowing the foods to avoid is essential.</p>
<p>Not all foods that are free of cholesterol as good for you.  What you should ideally concentrate on is maintaining a balanced healthy diet which includes food from all the major food groups.  For example, a recommended daily intake of five portions of fruit and vegetables is advisable.  Fruit and vegetables are delicious and nutritious as part of your daily diet as side dishes or snacks or you may consider a vegetarian option for your main meal.  All fruits and vegetables, should, however, be thoroughly sterilized by washing them before eating. The advantages of eating fruits and vegetables are that they are packed full of essential vitamins and minerals, are rich in fiber, and contain no cholesterol at all.</p>
<p>You should also aim to include carbohydrates as part of your daily diet.  The daily recommended amount of portions from this food group should be at least sixty per cent of your overall calorie intake which amounts to at least five to ten servings.  Carbohydrates include whole grain breads, cereals, rice and pasta.  The advantages are that carbohydrates are low in fat and rich in fiber.  However, some baked food does tend to have a high sugar content and you should restrict your intake as they do have a high cholesterol level and are generally not a healthy choice.</p>
<p>It is worth paying close attention to how some dishes are prepared in restaurants as there may be a choice of meals available that are specifically designed to be low in fat and cholesterol.</p>
<p>Always try to choose food that has not been fried in oil or have a breadcrumb coating.  The safest and healthiest options are dishes that are poached, grilled or baked.  If you are limited on time and have to eat convenience foods choose salads, poultry or lean meat rather than calorie laden sandwiches which may include  extras that are high in cholesterol content.</p>
<p>For breakfast, fruit and cereal are preferable to eggs, bacon and sausages which are already high in cholesterol but are made even more so by the way that they are prepared.</p>

<p>Cholesterol. We hear a lot about it, most of it simply you have to lower your cholesterol levels or you will get heart disease but there is a bit more to this substance that needs to be learned in order to truly understand what it does, why we need it, and why we DONT need too much of it.</p>
<p>First of all, cholesterol is a VITAL substance that<span id="more-29"></span> our body produces and we need it to maintain our health. We need it make vitamin D, build cell walls, AND create a type of bile salt that is needed to help us digest food. The thing is, our bodies MAKE all the cholesterol we need, about 1000 milligrams that is produced by our liver. So, if OUR bodies make cholesterol, where does the excess come from? Of course, the food we eat. <br />
All animals produce cholesterol, so the more animal protein and fat we eat (this includes products made from cows milks such as cheese and butter) the more cholesterol our bodies get. You may have heard of GOOD and BAD cholesterol, well, heres how that works&#038;</p>
<p>LDL, or low density lipoproteins, are the BAD kind. Although we need some of this, this is the kind that can build up on the walls of our blood vessels and cause blockages leading to heart disease, and potentially heart attacks. HDL, or high density lipoproteins, are the GOOD kind. HDL actually moves cholesterol back to the liver where it can be processed and removed from the body, therefore the more HDL you have, the better your body is able to regulate the health levels of cholesterol in the body. <br />
So, how does exercise come into play?</p>
<p>The fact of the matter is, exercise, intense REGULAR exercise, helps to generate more HDL by the liver. Therefore, the more you exercise, the higher your levels of HDL, and the lower your overall cholesterol levels. In addition, by increasing your heart rate and blood flow in your vessels and arteries by intense exercise, it is less likely that LDL levels will build up as plaque will occur. It needs to be said, and said AGAIN AND AGAIN that these processes can occur in the body very quickly, so it is vital that you stick with a consistent and very rigorous exercise routine. So many people think that their weekly backyard football game with the guys is enough, but it is NOT. You need as much as 45 minute to an hour of exercise everyd<br />

ay to truly affect the levels of cholesterol in your body. In addition, by limiting the amounts of animal fats and proteins you take in on a regular basis, you make the negative not as hard to counteract.</p>
<p>Now for the bad news&#038;many studies have concluded that some folks will have high cholesterol levels no matter HOW MUCH exercise they do. This is because either the liver produces too much, or the cholesterol they take in builds up along the walls of blood vessels extremely quickly. It is important that you check your cholesterol levels regularly and if diet and exercise alone cannot control your levels, you should take the medication as prescribed by your doctor.</p>
